Course Objective: Audiologists, dispensers, deaf educators, and other allied professions will gain a working knowledge of the recent research into cognitive and physiological aspects of auditory rehabilitation in a multidisciplinary perspective. This, in turn, will enable professionals to more effectively counsel their hearing impaired patients toward optimum outcomes, while working within an allied community care referral and delivery system.

10:30am “Audition, Cognition & The Human Brain: The Neurophysiology” (M. Chartrand) 2.0 ceu
I. Physiology of the central auditory process
II. Lower, mid, & higher brain function
III. Limbic and autonomic systems in auditory processing
IV. Abnormalities in development/deprivation

I. Psychosocial barriers from unmitigated hearing impairment
II. The Gender Factor: Demographics, culture, and human potential
III. Hearing instrument counseling & the rehabilitation process

4:00pm “Music: Expanding Human Potential” Lecture & Performance by Dr. Chartrand 1.0 ceu
I. Review of recent research in the influence of music on human cognition & rehabilitation
II. Musical skills build communicative skills for the hearing/cognitively impaired
III. Musical demonstration

Saturday, February 15th

9:00am “An Interdisciplinary Approach to Human Rehabilitation” (Chartrands) 3.0 ceu
I. Practice models for hearing healthcare professionals
II. Practice models for allied, health professionals
III. Practice models for counselors, educators, and therapists

12:00pm Lunch on own

1:00pm WORKING GROUPS: DEVELOPING PRACTICE MODELS (workshop) 2.5 ceu
During the workshop, attendees will be divided into allied teams of professionals representing various “communities”. Each will be given a specified “patient” exhibiting multiple problems, including hearing impairment. Each team will work out a program for their assigned patient and report to the larger group. Chartrands will advise and evaluate throughout the workshop.

3:30pm Multidisciplinary Assessment Exam .5 ceu
A short 10-question exam on the basic principles of the course will be taken during this time and self-graded. Attendees will hand in the graded exam as part of their completion requirements.

4:00pm “Marcus Welby, M.D. :What our patients need, expect, want” (Dr. Chartrand) 1.0 ceu
Dr. Chartrand will present an updated version of his “Dr. Welby Series”, providing an expose on what patients expect from their healthcare professionals. This moving finale to the course will incorporate the principles and models taught during the course.
